Thinking of heading away from the big smoke for the weekend? With this new upgrade, you’ll actually want to take the train.

Public transport isn’t often commended for being the most comfortable of travel options. For long distance journeys, the thought of being cooped up in a beaten up old carriage isn’t most people’s idea of fun.

But NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance is turning all of this on its head. Injecting an additional $2.8 billion into Sydney’s intercity rail network, they’ll be improvements rolling in from 2019 on lines to the Blue Mountains, the South Coast, the Central Coast and Newcastle.

So what can you expect? There’ll be a fresh set of 65 trains, all decked out with flashy new features like bike storage, luggage racks and the tantalising possibility of on-board Wi-Fi. It might not be quite as cushy as your own ride, but these trains will make any length rides a whole lot more enjoyable.
