As the artwork flew off the shelves and on to the walls of many a stylish apartment, Romano found himself pioneering the sale of decorative art online, inspiring a new generation of dealers. Now, with United Interiors, set to be one of the biggest online hubs for contemporary home accessories in Australia, he has brought the field’s leading brands together under one virtual roof: The Canvas Workshop, Art Luxe, Rugspace and, the original name that started it all back in 2012, United Artworks.
As Romano explains: “United Artworks was conceived in a retail furniture store where artworks (and rugs) were the biggest selling items. We also found that online sales were beginning to exceed sales that were coming through the door, and so a dedicated online art gallery was born.”
An artist himself, he drew on his love of modern masters De Koening, Klee and Kandinsky when curating the works for the website. ‘”It isn’t surprising to see the signature style in United Artworks being distinctly abstract with strong colour references,” he says.
With chic, affordable, Australian-made artworks on offer, as well as stylish pieces sourced from around the globe, it’s easy to see why decorating heavyweights such as Temple & Webster, The Block Shop and Zanui have fully bought into Romano’s philosophy – and with celebrity landscaper Jamie Durie, interior designers Alisa & Lysandra (The Block) and designer James Treble (The Living Room) on board, the United Interiors stable could hardly be stronger.
Romano adds: “Our brands are distinctly contemporary in their styling as they are focused toward the designer and decorator market across all the product categories. We also collaborate with designers to really stamp this into our brand ethos so you will know that you are always buying something that’s on trend.”
And it’s not just walls that United Interiors are covering – Rugspace, which ethically sources artisanal and hand-crafted rugs from India, China, Belgium, Egypt and Turkey, sees Romano, with a two-decade career in furnishings and interiors, returning to his roots. “The United Interiors concept now sees us going full circle with the addition of rugs, ottomans, cushions, throws and décor, but we remain focused upon our online presence which allows us to best serve the public and trade alike.”
